David Thorpe was trained as a fine artist in the UK, selling paintings through Windsor and Eton Fine Arts Gallery and Brighton Fine Arts Gallery before becoming a designer and illustrator for Mitchell Beazley Publishers (later to become Dorling Kindersley).

During those years he helped produce artwork and illustrations for the largest visual art bank in the world.

David was later offered a position of Art Director for a London based company in Cape Town followed by Die Huisgenoot magazine.

During David's time in Cape Town the South African Philatelic Bureau commissioned 10 sets of stamps for South Africa, Struik Publishers (now Random House Struik) commissioned illustrations for their books and numerous other prestigious clients set David noteworthy assignments.

After 30 years of illustrating David took a break for 3 years and took up Rose Gardening in Plettenberg Bay before returning to Oil Painting which is his current passion and for which he currently takes commissions.
